Milenyo's wrath.

Y2K bug is over six years ago, but it came back with a vengeance in the form of Super typhoon Milenyo.

Milenyo struck Paete at about 9:00 in the morning of September 28. With gustiness of the wind reaching 130 kph and windspeed at 120 kph, Milenyo affected a total of 339 families in Paete alone. A total of 339 homes were damaged with 26 of them being destroyed completely. Among the affected buildings was the Mabini Bldg. of the Eastern Laguna Colleges and the San Luis Bldg. of San Juan National High School - PAETE Annex (also known as Poten and Eliseo Quesada Memorial National High School) Five persons were injured in the said typhoon.
The Paete Roman Catholic Church, Liceo de Paete, SJNHS - Paete Annex, and the Barangay Halls of Brgy. Ibaba del Sur, Brgy. Ilaya del Norte, Brgy. Ilaya del Sur and Barangay Bagumbayan were designated as evacuation centers during the duration of the calamity.
The last time a tragedy of the same magnitude hit Paete was last August 13, 2002 when flashfloods flooded Paete for 2 hours and left many debris and mud in the streets.

PEQMNHS Freaky Friday

Jonathaniel Conde succesfully defended his STEP Skills crown in Bartending while Joebert Solis easily won the Welding competitions without even using his tools as PEQMNHS endured its own version of Freaky Friday las September 22 with many students participating in various competitions and eventually winning some of them.
Conde, a Regional veteran in the category easily wowed the judges and competitors with his body movements and suave cocktail drink that had surely got the judges nods and tastebuds.
Solis, got a lucky break as no other else competed and thereby earning the top spot without a hitch.
Dean Leo Baldemor of the Mr. STEP 2006 competitions fell short while Jorlan Aquino, Jorge Ian Magracia, Emmanuel Paz and Jayson Bañez of the Mural Painting contest dropped a heartbreaking and controversial decision against their competitors.
Conde is coached by Ms. Jeanette F. Bañez, Baldemor is mentored by Mrs. Arsenia San Juan while the Mural Painting team is spearheaded by Mr. Robert Cuevas.

PEQMNHS Joins ALay Lakad 2006

PEQMNHS continued its yearly tradition of joining the Alay Lakad this morning as majority of the students and the faculty walked for a cause.
Students from the school's year levels participated actively with CAT cadets assisting the effort to organize the PEQMNHS line.
And also, PEQMNHS unveiled its Drum and Lyre Band (DLB) this morning.
This was the second time the DLB sounded their music. The first time was during the Schools' Intramurals 2006 held last August.
This year's Alay Lakad was attended by Paete's schools, public and private, non-government organizations, barangay and municipal officials and organized by Guardians Brotherhood Inc. (GBI)

History Team Wins Anew.

PEQMNHS further cemented its status as one of the most promising schools in the 4th District as two of its students distinguished themselves in the recently concluded "Historical Quiz Bee" held this morning at Mabitac Central School, Mabitac, Laguna.
Rene James P. Balandra Jr.of IV-Gomez garnered 3rd place in a field of 30 participants from 15 public and private schools of the 4th district while the school's other participant, Jemuel Sutare of II-Abueva reached the second round of the said contest.
Balandra received a medal, certificate books for himself and school and a P 750 cash prize from the National Historical Institute, and the Municipal Government of Mabitac.
The Quiz Bee is part of the celebration of the 106th Anniversary of the Battle of Mabitac.
The two is coached by Mr. Victor F. David along with Mr. Rolando A. Afunggol.

Senior Students Sweeps It!!!

Maria Rosanna Cosico and Dean Leo Baldemor, both of IV-Gomez won the PEQMNHS Search for the Mr. and Ms. STEP 2006 this afternoon at the IV-Gomez room.
Cosico and Baldemor both won two special awards each, the Best in Talent and Best in Swimsuit for Cosico and Best in Sports Wear for Baldemor.
They faced stiff challenge from the second year pair of Majel Tobise and Ralf Dennis Cosico who also won two special awards each, namely: Best in Trade Wear and Best in School Uniform.
Cosico eventually placed as first runner-up along with fellow second year student Emilyn Aguinaldo. Tobise settled for second runner-up honors along with third year student Victor Dagawin. Placing fourth is Jomar Salceda and Ma. Chrisiana Lian Acyatan.
The board of judges for the competition is composed of Mr. Jassed Cabrera, Ms. Marjorie Kagahastian and Mr. Noli Millar.
The winner will compete in the Mr. and Ms. STEP Competitions tp be held in Lumban, Laguna this coming September.

SENIORS WINS IT!!!

Experience is the best teacher.
And the Seniors truly embody this saying as they used their savvy to defeat the rampaging Sophomores to win the PEQMNHS Intramurals 2006 Over-all Crown.
The veteran Senior Spikers mauled their counterparts in the Volleyball Competitions. Bannered by Tournament MVP Niño dela Cruz, Leonardo dela Cruz, and Andre Sadsad, the Seniors swept the tournament. In the distaff side, Criselda Landrito led the Senior Volleybelles endured some scary moments before unleashing their attacks to claim the throne.
The Sophomore Shuttler mangled their opponents as they won the Boys and Girls Singles Crown along with the Girls crown to dominate the event and provide some thrill and chills for their Senior Counterparts.
The Juniors salvaged their tainted pride by bringing home the Sepak Takraw diadem to settle for third place while the Freshmen showed fighting spirit but eventually fell short of their goal as they were pushed to the cellar by their more experienced counterparts.
Some anxious moments have to be faced by the Seniors squad as the Seniors Five ended up receiving the short end of the stick as the Sophomore Brute Squad composed of Mythical Team members James Fadul, Ronaldo Pacurib and Jeffrey Maloles lorded it over inside as the Senior dribblers bannered by fellow Mythical members Jerwin Bagacina, Alvin dela Cruz and Victor Hernandez failed to hold the fort to eventually lose 53-47 in their Finals encounter.
Marvin Bagan of the Sophomores was adjudged the Intramurals 2006 Most Valuable Player.
But in the end, the Seniors reigned supreme and supressed all their adversaries to clinch the crown.
The victors of each event will now be competing in the District level Competition to be held in Lumban, Laguna this September.

PEQMNHS Scores Again!!!

The PEQMNHS team of Rene James Balandra, Jorlan Aquino, both of IV-Gomez and Jemuel Sutare of II-Abueva reaped honors as they reached the Finals of the Ika-9 Tagisang Pilipino held this afternoon at the Santiago Rolle Hall of the Cavite State University- Severino delas Alas Campus, Indang Cavite.
The trio eventually scored thirty points. Enough for them to clinched seventh place but fell short of the Top Five as they are three points shy from 5th place winner, Assumption College, Pampanga.
Cavite Governor Erineo "Ayong" Maliksi and Kulturang Pamana President Gerry Gamez attended the event.
Mr. Victor F. David coached the trio.

Seniors Draw First Blood

With three events down and the volleyball classification rounds over, the Seniors seems on track to capture the Over-all crown of the PEQMNHS Intramurals 2006.
The 4th year student Patricia de Chavez won the Girls Scrabble event and placing second in the distaff side while dominating the Dama Comepetitions. The Freshies brought home both the Boys and the Girls Crown for the chess competitions as Alfredo Cia upstaged his highly touted rivals Jonathaniel Conde of the Seniors and Jean Claude Madridejos of the Sophomores. And Emerson Valdecantos copped the Boys Scrabble Crown for the Juniors.
Meanwhile, the Senior Spikers bumped the field this morning as they beat the Freshmen in straight sets, 25-16, 25-20, despite the limited presence of Captain Ball Niño dela Cruz and bumped off their 2nd year rivals, also in straight sets, 25-13, 25-21 to advanced to the Finals of the Boys Event slated to be held tomorrow, also at the PEQMNHS Hi-way Site. The Senior Volleybelles achieved the same result but in a difficult way as they endured a three-set scare from the Freshies before bumping them off, 25-14, 21-25, 15-13. They also humiliated their Junior counterparts via straight sets, 25-9, 25-23 to advanced to the Volleyball Girls Finals tomorrow.
The second spot in both divisions will be at stake tomorrow as the Junior Spikers and their Freshmen counterparts face each other for the first and last time to earn the right to battle the Sophomore squad. Whoever wins between the Sophomores and the winner between the 1st year and the 3rd year will earn the second Finals berth and a date with the Senior Spikers.
In the distaff side, the same scenario happens as the Freshies face the Sophies in a do-or-die match for the right to battle the Juniors. Whoever wins between the Juniors and the victor between the Sophies and the Freshies will earn the second Finals berth and also a date with the Senior Volleybelles.
In Sepak Takraw , the Seniors and the Juniors turn back their respective rivals to march to the Winners Bracket and the arranged a titular showdown between the two.
The Intrams 2006 will continue tomorrow with Basketball having its debut in this year's games, at 7:00 in the morning, Volleyball continues its games tomorrow along with Badminton, Darts, Athletics, Table Tennis, and Sepak Takraw.

A School with Many Names???

The official name of PEQMNHS is San Juan National High School- Paete Extension. Our kababayans call our school PEQMNHS- Poten and Eliseo Quesada Memorial National High School and to other schools, it is Paete National High School.

But for us, the name doen't matter at all. The important is the quality eduation it brings to us and to our fellow Paetenian youths.

It started serving us in the year 2003 with just 6 teachers guiding more than 250 students. Now, it has grown into a school housing 1,215 students as of last June, 2006 while having just fourteen teachers to educate them. And yet this problems were never a hindrance for the school to shine in competitions. Instead, it has become one of the inspirations for the school to get to the next level. It consistently upped its level of excellence the last three years starting as perennial school champions in the San Juan National High School community to being national level winners last year.

It has weathered all the storms in had endured throughout its young history. It has faced enormous challenges and endured rough seas on its way to where it is now.
A year from now, the school with many names will now be a school with a proud name. It will be the end of the Pioneer Age of SJNHS-Paete Extension or should I say, Poten and Eliseo Quesada Memorial National High School. It will mark the changing of the guards, it will signal the start of a new era for PEQMNHS.

And after all of this, the school with many names will finally end its search for its own true name. A name it can hold dear, a name it can cherish, a name it can truly call its own.

Who will win all the marbles???
After 4 years of waiting, PEQMNHS finally completed its cast of year levels and all of them are surely raring to do battle.
The Seniors had emerged as the Over-all champion last year(as the Juniors Batch '05-'06) on the strenght of its win in Girls Volleyball, Basketball and Chess along with its consistent showing in the other sports and is raring to regain it despite the departure of some important pieces in the Senior's championship puzzle.
They still have Niño dela Cruz' spiking power, Mac Garcia's badminton skills, Jonathaniel Conde and Benedick Cagayat's chess wizardry, and Jobert Cadawas' magical feet. They will be again at the forefront of the all-out Senior's assault at the crown.
Will their experience and poise bring them to the crown?
The Juniors has an ax to grind against the Seniors and will surely have their hands full to break the Seniors' Fortress. They will be towed by Mark Sasa's stinging spikes, along with a boisterous cheering squadron and others.
Can they execute vengeance against their rivals???
The Sophomores have been installed as one of the early favorites, what with a rejuvenated sports cast bolstered by the return of the Fadul brothers. They have both brute strenght, athleticism and profound agility. They have proven their worth by giving the Juniors' squad(Seniors now) last year a scare before bowing out in the FInals of the basketball competitions and by ruling the Badminton competitions.
Can brute force and athleticism bring the Sophomores to the throne???
The freshmen squad is certainly the new kids on the block but they can surely provide some surpirses.
First Time Luck coming in???

The answer to all this will be known on Friday, August 25, at the PEQMNHS campus as the Intramurals 2006 unfolds.

Gloria, ex-DECS, DoST secretary, dies at 66

FORMER Education Secretary Ricardo Gloria died on Sunday due to complications from diabetes.

He was 66.

According to his son, Bong Gloria, his father was first admitted to the Philippine Heart Center on May 25 because of problems with his heart.
On June 5, Gloria underwent a coronary bypass surgery. Yesterday, his son said an infection brought about by his diabetic condition led to his death at around 9:30 a.m.
Gloria’s body was brought to the Church Among the Palms inside the University of the Philippines campus in Los Baños, Laguna.
On Wednesday, his body will be brought to United Church of Christ in the Philippines in Digos, Davao del Sur. He will be buried on Sunday at the Digos Memorial Park.

TAIPAN John Gokongwei Jr. marked his 80th birthday on Friday by donating an unprecedented P10.25 billion to education and other causes.

Gokongwei surprised his children and business associates by announcing that he would donate his entire personal shareholdings in JG Summit Holdings—equivalent to 25 percent of the listed conglomerate, or about P10.25 billion—to charity.
“Life has been good to me,” Gokongwei told over 1,000 business associates and friends who packed the Gokongwei-owned Crowne Plaza hotel in Ortigas. “I want to give back the blessings that I have received.”
Gokongwei and his wife, Elizabeth, control half of JG Summit, which had a market capitalization of P41.46 billion as of Friday.
The taipan’s conjugal half would accrete to the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation, which already owns 16.61 percent of JG Summit.
Gokongwei said the considerable paperwork for the transfer would take at least two weeks.

Mayon’s lava flow threatens villages

LEGAZPI CITY -- Mayon Volcano’s main lava flow along the Mabinit channel was barely 100 aerial meters away from the six-kilometer permanent danger zone boundary yesterday, posing a fire hazard to crops and vegetation in the villages of Mabinit and Bonga, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The front of the main lava trail, which on closer view is almost as tall as a four-story building, was reported to be 5.9 aerial kilometers from the crater now, or almost two kilometers farther than that of the 2001 eruption.

“Areas that will be engulfed by the lava flow will be barren for quite a long time and cannot be tilled by farmers because the lava will harden into rocks. It is unavoidable that there will be a devastation of some existing vegetation at the volcano’s slopes and foot,” said Alex Baloloy, a research analyst at Phivolcs-Legazpi.

Blockbuster trade in peril

Aggrieved PBA teams urge Eala to reject trade

THE PHILIPPINE Basketball Association has held in abeyance its approval of a recent trade actually involving eight players from Air 21 and sister teams Ginebra and Coca-Cola.

"This trade is not valid until approved by our office," said PBA Commissioner Noli Eala during yesterday’s PSA Forum at the Pantalan Restaurant in Manila.

Eala said the trade involving a couple of marquee players is being reviewed whether or not it conformed with league rules, particularly on trades involving players from sister teams.

"We will use all existing and applicable rules here. If the trade conformed to the rules, then it will be approved. If not, the teams may be asked to make some considerations," said Eala.

"But pending review, the trade has not been approved by the PBA," said the commissioner. The decision will come out in a few days.

Officials from other teams questioned the trade, saying it was Ginebra, the crowd favorite, which benefited the most with the acquisition of former Coca-Cola players Billy Mamaril and Raffy Reavies.

Under PBA rules, sister teams cannot be involved in direct trades. Aside from Ginebra and Coca-Cola, also under the San Miguel Corporation banner in the PBA are San Miguel Beer and Purefoods.

First Time Success???

The UPCAT has been one of the dreams of every high school senior since its institution, and for the first time in its young history, eleven students from PEQMNHS will try their luck to enter the Philippines' premier university.
They are Rene James Balandra, Ma. Carmina Viray, Marjorie de Rosas, Patricia de Chavez, Jacklyn Selga, Dean Leo Baldemor, Jorlan Aquino, Jorge Ian Magracia, Timothy Bernas, Marielle Josuah Borja and Benedick Cagayat.
Balandra, Viray, de Rosas and de Chavez are fixtures in the top five while Aquino and Magracia are recipients of the Artist of the Year award for the year 2004, and 2005.
Selga will start the ball rolling as she will take the exam on the morning of August 5 while Balandra and Magracia will take theirs in the afternoon. Sunday takers meanwhile is composed of Viray, de Rosas, Baldemor, Aquino and Bernas for the morning exams and de Chavez, Borja and Cagayat for the afternoon session.

With the heavens blessing Paete with abundant rain this morning, the first Paete Chef Culinary Festival go on as scheduled as Paete's young blood showed their wares and wowed the spectators with their magical handling of the chisel and intricate designs.
This year's event was truly a success with Paete's future kitchen artists and ice carvers actively participated in the following events: Cheese platter, Fruit and vegetable garnishing, the centerpiece Ice Carving event and the Bartending Competition. The Paetenians who stand above the rest is Danilo Fancubillo Jr., Jayson dela Cruz and Allan Alvaro Baet, first, second and third place respectively. Michael Valdecantos ruled the Fruit and Vegetable Garnishing event with Allan Afunggol and Aristeo Lontoc garnering runner-up honors respectively. Gregorio Olivo unleashed his chisel's magic power to rule the centerpiece Ice Carving event with Gian Paolo Raña placing second and Alfredo Reyes settling for third.
In the Bartending competition, Nic Rea aka "Mr. Mix" got the fancy of the judge's taste buds as he danced his way to a first place finish despite enduring two broken bottles. Kenneth Acorda and Joemer Selga were tied for second and third place.
The winners will receive 3,000 pesos plus trophy for the champion, 2,000 pesos plus trophy for the second place, and 1,000 pesos plus trophy for the third placer. And also a chance to be hired as kitchen artists by the PTC-Royal Carribean Cruise Lines and Magsaysay Maritime Corporation in their ships and an overnight stay in the Manila hotel courtesy by Manila Hotel President and former Laguna governor Jose Lina.

SENATOR Manuel Villar assumed the presidency of the Senate after he was voted in by his colleagues at the resumption of their regular session this Monday.

Villar was nominated by his predecessor Franklin Drilon who called the incoming head as “Mr. Sipag at Tiyaga (Mr. Hardworking).”

“To honor a gentleman's agreement, I am relinquishing the post of Senate president. At the appropriate time, I will take the privilege of nominating Senator Manuel Villar to the post of Senate president. I am certain that the lofty task of leading the Upper House of Congress is in the hands of an esteemed colleague with a proven track record of efficiency and love of country,” Drilon said in his last speech as Senate president.

Kerby Raymundo and James Yap carried the fight in the end game as they humiliated the vaunted Red Bul defense and giving Red Bull their own douse of medicine by playing impenetrable defense and splendid 3-pt. shooting.
With the campionship on the line, the responded very well and along with Finals MVP Mark Pingris, they towed the Giants to their first title since 2003 and Coach Ryan Gregorio's second one.
"We took off the No. 33 because we didn’t want Red Bull to tie the series at 3-3. We replaced it with the letters ET because it meant End Tonight,” said the venerable Purefoods mentor who was behind the inspiring run of the Chunkee Giants to the top from the cellar.
ET of course stands for Eugene Tejada, the fuel that revved up the Chunkee Giants and was a source of inspiration for them.
But nothing was happier than Jun Limpot as he finally nailed his first PBA title after 13 years and finally erased the stigma of "being the best player never to have won a championship."
“Sa wakas nakuha ko na rin ang matagal ko nang pinapangarap,” said the 33-year old grizzled veteran.
The game seemed to be handed on a silver platter as Red Bull got off to a bad start as the Chunkee Giants zoomed to a 16-point lead, 30-14 at the start of the first quarter, but the Barakos never lose hope and was in position to extend the series to a deciding seventh game. And yet, season MVP James Yap, Raymundo and Pingris responded well to the challenge and extinguished the fiery Red Bull rally with nifty baskets and the untimely sixth foul of Red Bull key player Junthy Valenzuela early in the fourth.

Do you know who your ancestors are? Well this is your chance to know them.
Paete's community launched the Paete Family Trees project to let Paete's younger generations to know their ancestors, and to answer this questions, who they are and when did they live.
It was based on the 3000 page compilation of Tandang Dodo Mamoy Cajumban and is now continued by the new generations up to the youngest ones. The first phase which consists of photocopying, scanning and refurbishing of this pages is nearing completion and phase which is made up of the process of taking these facts into databases and putting it on the net using the deluxe version of the family tree maker program.
Helping this project is the Municipal Government of Paete, the town's three high schools namely Eastern Laguna Colleges, Liceo de Paete and Poten and Eliseo Quesada Memorial National High School (official name is San Juan National High School- Paete Annex) and many other volunteers.
This project is spearheaded by Mrs. Ofelia Ac-ac Demyttanaere with the help of Councilor Odette Sunga.

With twenty participants each competing in the fruit and vegetable garnishing category, Cheese platter and the centerpiece ice carving event, and five in the bartending contest, this year's edition promises to be a big one.
Many prizes await the winners and it includes a job abroad for the winners of the event.
This year's celebrations are to be graced by Hon. Teresita Lazaro and Hon. Edwin Olivarez, the Governor and Vice-Governor of the province of Laguna, Mr. Jose Lina, President of the Manila Hotel and many others.

35 evacuation centers readied for Mayon folk

LEGAZPI CITY -- (UPDATE) Albay province has been placed under a state of calamity as the restive Mayon Volcano showed signs of a “hazardous eruption,” volcanologists said Tuesday.

The silent, steady flow of lava and debris on the 8,118-foot mountain for the fifth straight day Tuesday prompted authorities to prepare evacuation centers for close to 75,000 people.

Disaster officials urged the 4,343 farmers working inside the six-kilometer radius permanent danger zone to immediately evacuate the area.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) Director Renato Solidum noted that lava flows, similar to the one on Friday, preceded major eruptions of Mayon in 1993, 2000, and 2001.

"If you look at the trend… all ended in a hazardous eruption," Solidum said.

After the lava flows, Solidum said pyroclastic materials, composed of rocks, ash and hot gas would cascade from the Mayon crater.

Solidum said Legazpi City, Sto. Domingo town, and a portion of Bacacay town southeast of the volcano are most at risk should the volcano erupt.

The lowly, often set aside and misplaced "barya" (loose change) is now the center of attraction as a nationwide campaign to renew interest in the value of thriftiness and saving for the benefit of elementary public schools has been launched.

Dubbed "Tulong Barya Para sa Eskwela," the month-long nationwide donation campaign is a joint project of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and the Department of Education as part of the "National Savings Consciousness Week" celebration.

The campaign hopes to raise funds for public elementary schools by enticing the people to donate their coins in specially-designed "money banks."

It also hopes to raise awareness and encourage the public to accept and use coins regularly to keep them circulating.

Israel blasts Beirut airport for 2nd day

BEIRUT, Lebanon - Israeli warplanes punished the Lebanese capital on Friday, blasting the airport for a second day, knocking down a bridge, igniting fuel storage tanks and cutting the main highway to
Syria. Hezbollah fired more rockets at Israeli towns across the border.

Police said three people were killed and 55 wounded in the airstrikes, raising the death toll to 60 on the third day of fighting.
Israel's target was Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militant Shiite faction which has a free hand in southern Lebanon and also holds seats in parliament. Hezbollah began the current conflict Wednesday with a cross-border raid that captured two of Israel's soldiers.

James Yap Ends the reign of the Fil-ams...

The past two seasons, Fil-ams have lorded it over the landscape of the Philippine Basketball Association, but this time they are finally denied.
Once a seven-year old who dreamed to play in Asia's first play-for-pay league, James shone above the rest yesterday as he copped the Most Valuable Player award of the 2005-06 season.
Having one of the quickest ascension to the MVP throne, Boy Thunder as Yap is fondly called, got 7,863 total points to virtually clinched the award in runaway fashion as closest pursuer and teammate Kerby Raymundo managed to to get 2,960 total points or a clear 5,000 point difference.
Among the quickest winners of the MVP award was Benjie Paras who won it in his rookie year and Willie Willer who copped it during his sophomore year.
Yap also leads the Mythical First Team along with Raymundo, Purefoods' teammate Roger Yap and Red Bull's Enrico Villanueva and Lordy Tugade. The Mythical Second Team was bannered by Scoring champion Mark "The Spark" Caguioa of Brgy. Ginebra, Mike Cortez of Alaska, Marc Pingris of Purefoods and the San Miguel duo of Dorian Pena and "The Dynamite" Danny Seigle.
The Rookie of the Year award went to Larry Fonacier of Red Bull. He is the lowest-drafted player ever to won the award.
The All-Defensive Team was composed of Pingris also adjudged as the Most Improved Player, Pena, Alaska's Nic Belasco, Air 21's Wynne Arboleda and Red Bull's Topex Robinson. While Robinson also copped the Mr. Energy award while Tony dela Cruz of Alaska was the winner of the Sportsmanship award.
It is also the first time in seven years that a Fil-am failed to enter the Mythical First Team and also the first time that a player who entered the league in the 90's failed to be a member of the Mythical First Team.

MANILA (AFP) - Eight people including six Philippines military officers have been detained in a raid that may have foiled a plot to attack the legislature during an address by President Gloria Arroyo later this month, the authorities said.
A team of soldiers and police swooped on a house in suburban Manila near the House of Representatives complex before dawn and arrested the eight, seizing guns, bombs, documents, and a blueprint of the government building, they said.
"As we all know, the state of the nation address of the president is approaching," national police chief Oscar Calderon told a news conference.
Arroyo is set to deliver the annual policy address at the legislature on July 24.
The group rented the house several weeks ago and the authorities pounced after a three-day stakeout, military officials said.
"It arouses your interest why they would rent a house there at this point in time, and then we found this blueprint of the (House of Representatives building) in their possession," said armed forces chief of staff General Generoso Senga.
"It's too early to jump into conclusions, but we are looking at bits of pieces of information and we are trying to put them together," he added.
The rebel officers were said to be members of Magdalo, a military faction linked to a foiled coup plot against Arroyo that was uncovered earlier this year, as well as another coup attempt in July 2003.
Police have also named the group as potentially responsible for a recent spate of bombings in Manila.
Calderon said police ordnance experts would compare the high explosives that were seized in the raid with evidence previously gathered from the blasts "to determine if the components found at the blast scenes are the same."

NDF works out revival of talks in Norway

MALACAÑANG remains committed to pursuing its all-out war against communist rebels even if exiled leaders of the communist-led National Democratic Front have asked Norway to convince President Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo to return to the negotiating table.

In a statement, the NDF said it had sent its top leadership to Oslo on Monday for four days of consultations with the Norwegian foreign ministry.

Norway had facilitated the peace talks between the Philippine government and the NDF before negotiations were scuttled in 2004.

The delegation is composed of NDF chief negotiator Luis Jalandoni, Fidel Agcaoili, Connie Ledesma, Julie de Lima and Asterio Palima.

Also present in the consultations are NDF chief political consultant Jose Maria Sison, lawyer Romeo Capulong, NDF’s senior legal adviser and NDF panel consultant Danilo Borjal.

“As far as we know the stance of government remains the same, which is no negotiations unless there is a ceasefire (on hostilities),” Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye told reporters yesterday, when asked to comment on the NDF leaders’ consultations with the Norwegian foreign ministry.

Ms Arroyo declared last month an all-out war on communist rebels and set aside P1 billion for the military and police for the acquisition of hardware like helicopter gunships to crush the 38-year communist insurgency in two years in certain parts of Luzon.

As part of the all-out war, the government is preparing to file murder cases against Sison, founding chair of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), both in the Netherlands where he is based and in the Philippines.

“Consultations with the NDF are part of the ordinary contacts that Norway has with the parties. We had the same kind of talks with representatives from the (Philippine) government at the beginning of June,” Tore Hattrem, director general of the Section of Peace and Reconciliation at the Norwegian foreign ministry, told AFP.

Hattrem said there were no prospects for a quick restart of the peace talks on the Philippines, “but we are working with the aim that the talks can be resumed in a longer perspective.”

Bunye said no meaningful negotiations could start because the New People’s Army (NPA), the military arm of the CPP, had launched attacks on government forces.

Besides, he did not think the CPP-NDF-NPA was sincere in returning to the peace table. “Let me say action speaks louder than words, and by their actions they don’t seem to be serious in pursuing real meaningful negotiations,” Bunye said.

Presidential Chief of Staff Mike Defensor has said the government will just engage in peace negotiations with communist leaders at the grass-roots level.

The NDF called off negotiations with the government two years ago because of the terrorist tag on the CPP, NDF and NPA by the United States. The CPP and the 7,400-member NPA are also on the European Union’s list of terrorist groups, while the Netherlands-based NDF is not.

“The consultations shall deal with the possibility of resuming the formal talks while the Arroyo regime is still in power,” said Ruth de Leon, executive director of the NDF International information office.

Human rights violations

The delegation also wants Norway to convince the Philippine government to respect agreements between the government and the NDF concerning respect for civil rights, “in the face of rampant gross human rights violations in the Philippines.”

The Joint Monitoring Committee (JMC) monitors the implementation of the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL).

The JMC offices in Quezon City are funded by the Norwegian government and have been receiving complaints of violations of the CARHRIHL by both government and NDF forces since 2004.

However, members from both sides have yet to meet to discuss the human rights violations charges -- more than 800 of them -- because of the stalled formal talks.

At least 233 leftist activists have been killed since Ms Arroyo took power in 2001. The military and the police have denied allegations that they are conducting a “dirty war.”

De Leon said the Norwegian government and peace advocates the world over recognized the need for vigorous efforts for the resumption of peace negotiations amid the escalating human rights violations under the Arroyo administration’s all-out war policy.”

In a report, Hattrem had commented that the rise in political killings and human rights violations in the country was stalling the peace negotiations.

Reforms

The NDF said the consultations in Oslo “shall also deal with how to keep active and productive the NDF negotiating panel and the NDF reciprocal working committee on social and economic reforms, and possibly working groups on political and constitutional reforms and on the end of hostilities and disposition of forces.”

The NDF said it planned to continue to prepare drafts of agreements on social, economic and political reforms and to test them in working sessions and open forums with respected Filipino experts and certain government officials and the political opposition.

“Thus, a level of consensus shall be reached even before the resumption of the formal talks, and thus accelerating the progress of future negotiations,” it said.

Senator Madrigal

On Monday, Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez accused opposition Senator Maria Ana Consuelo “Jamby” Madrigal of “treason” and warned she could be prosecuted after she held unauthorized talks with NDF leaders in the Netherlands.

Madrigal, an Arroyo critic, has insisted she has no political agenda and is only interested “in preventing further bloodshed.”

She issued a joint statement with the rebel leaders urging Ms Arroyo to halt the military offensive and to return to peace talks.

Stop terror acts

Asked what actions the communist rebels should take to show they were sincere in resuming peace talks, Bunye said the rebels should stop torching cell sites, ambushing certain people, and planting land mines.

He said the government would assess the situation should the communist rebels stop their terror acts.

“I think the stance of government is to pursue the armed elements of the communist group but at the same time we will pursue social development projects for the countryside where they have been recruiting their members,” Bunye said.

Despite Pacman's failure to knocked out Mexican Oscar "Chololo" Larios, still Pacquiao dominated the one sided fight except some anxious moments in the third round as he won via unaminous decision to succesfully defend his WBC International Super Featherweight crown and seal the much awaited Pacquiao-Morales III to be held in November.
Pacquiao seems to be out of sync as he nearly kissed the canvas in the third round after Chololo's flurry of powerful 1-2 combinations but he shrugged it off and turn the tables around as Pacman use his super handspeed and agility to circle his way around Larios and dropped his patended strong punches to the body, to the chin and almost everywhere. The one sidedness of the fight can be seen in the judges score as they scored the fight 117-110, 118-108 and 120-106.
"I don't really think Manny excelled until maybe the sixth round," trainer Freddie Roach said. "He just seemed to be coasting." Many feared that Pacquiao may have his skills eroded after he concentrated on showbizness after the Morales fight but he proved them wrong.
Along with Pacquiao's victory, other Filipino boxers also defeated their rivals to blank Mexico in their Mano-a-mano match-up.
And because of his victory, PGMA conferred to Pacquiao the Order Of Sikatuna with the rank of "Champion for Life" due to his "leadership, fortitude, courage and resolve to serve the people." Along with him is fellow Filipino victor in the Mano-a-mano matchup Jimrex Jaca.
Larios is said to be staying in the Super Featherweight division to fuel speculations that there might be a rematch between the two some other time but for now, Morales is the boxer that Pacquiao wants.

Pacman has eaten tough Mexicans in the past, and on Sunday, July 2, he wants to add another and his name is Oscar "Chololo" Larios.

Pacquiao has been on cloud nine as he has conquered the best of the super featherweight division and Chololo simply wants to bring Manny back to earth. Despite the overwhelming odds, Larios seems unfazed as his manager even said that Chololo is at 1000 percent.

"Larios is now mentally and physically ready for Pacquiao. The only thing that needs to be seen is if his chin can hold up to the power of Pacquiao. If it does, then it will be easy from there," said Mendoza.

While at the other side, Pacquiao's renowned trainer Freddie Roach is singing a different tune.

"Maybe he will come right at us early and that’s going to be our advantage and I hope he does and he will force Manny to respond and when Manny responds, usually good things happen," said Roach, his blue eyes sparkling as the early morning sunshine radiates inside his room at The Manila Hotel.

"But if Larios decides to box from a distance which Roach sees is going to happen, it might frustrate Manny but we have worked on how to cut the ring off. We have to go behind the jab and hit the body."

Manny is definitely the more technically superior and the more powerful puncher between the two but Chololo says he has magic up his sleeves. If Manny can finish it in less than 6 so be it and if not Chololo my spring a surprise.

The Life and Legacy of Poten and Eliseo Quesada

Two dedicated public educators joined by love. That is the story of Mr. Eliseo Madriñan Quesada and Mrs. Potenciana Castañeda Quesada.
Eliseo was a native of Paete while Potenciana was from Mandaluyong, Rizal. Distanced cannot stop them and they were married in Manila on April 22, 1939. They were blessed with two daughters namely Carmencita, who was born on January 10, 1940 and Nora, born on January 10, 1945. During those trying times of the Japanese occupation, they endured that dark times along with other Paetenians. It was then April 1945 and liberation fever was everywhere, the Huks abducted Eliseo and 13 other men including his father Casiano and from thereon, they were never seen again. They were collectively known as the 14 Martyrs of Paete. Thus began the uphill struggle of Potenciana to raise her twon young daughters all by herself. Potenciana weathered all those trying times and survived. In 1961, Potenciana migrated to the United States after 30 years of dedicated teaching in public and private elementary schools. There, she pursue and obtained in 1962 her long overdue Masters degree from the University of San Francisco, California.Her daughters, Nora and Carmencita joined her in the United States and they easily adjusted to their foreign environment. While in the United States, Potenciana found a new love in Louis Buñales and together, they indulged in activities involving Filipino and civic organizations until Louis died in 1976. She also did volunteer hospital work in New Jerseyandalso traveled extensively in the Philippines, the United States and everywhere. And she was also board member of the UPAA NJ and also an alumna awardee of UPAAA. She lived on to witness her daughter's marriage, her bubbling apo's and her apo's fondly called her, their "living encyclopedia." Potenciana died in peace at a ripe age of 91 last March 23, 2003.
They are the humble persons that serve not just their countrymen and other people. And for that, we must be grateful that our school is named after two great public educators that had brought honor to Paete.

9. The Leaning Building of Paete- Who can forget the leaning of the Ningning Lazaro Building. That is the start of the Shifting Classes and tis story even reached the newspapers and the televisions.

8. The Sir Laurence Controversy-
Maybe its on a bad note but its one of the most memorable and one of the most regretable experience we ever had. It started on a wrong foot followed by another until it was over and gone are one of the "best teachers" PEQMNHS has. Its water under the bridge so this does not need elaboration but for us, it must be the other way around. Still hoping that he's coming back again for another ride.

7. First Day of Classes- Going to school has been a good experience but going to an upper market schoool?? Sitting on the floor, sharing a book with a fellow student, having to share a room with 100 other students and of course go to school at 6:00 am in the morning or if you're on the afternoon shift, go home at 8:15 pm??? That's a damn good experience!!! Since its foundation in 2003, the Upper Market site has been the home of the Freshies and they damn like it a lot. Even though its "nakakahiya", you can't help but enjoy your stay there.

6. SY 2006-07- This is our last school year, the defining moment of the Pioneer batch, this is maybe the most memorable school year we will ever have so we will make sure its not just a dream, we will make it a reality. That enough, makes it memorable thus landing at no. 6.

5. The Carver Experience- It's very difficult to make a school newspaper especially if you have to spend be content with a meager budget but The Carver, the PEQMNHS' official schoolpaper had defied odds and was fixture in the Division Secondary Schools Press Conference since its debut there in 2003. It even has a RSPC Award for its Editorial Page despite having only 3 years of experience. Surely, its one of the most consistent performers in the PEQMNHS' roster of wizards and it surely deserves to be at the Top Five of our memorable moments.

4. Altamero-Afurong Math Quiz Bee- 7 out of 10 finalists are from PEQMNHS including the champion and the runner-up. This result further validates PEQMNHS' as the leading high school in Paete. To borrow a line from a diaper commercial, EQ- economy and quality baga.

3. Ika-8 Tagisang Pilipino- PEQMNHS' first win in a national level contest, need to say more???

2. Brain Wizard 2004-
PEQMNHS' held their against much experienced contestants to edge Paete's two other high school and take away the Brain WIzard 2004 title. They defied the odds and the win begin the gradual rise of PEQMNHS. This contest was destined to be a mismatch as all of the PEQMNHS' participants are first year students and four of the five honor students are not competing due to different reasons but despite of that, they hurdle the humongous obstacles and emerged triumphant in the end.

1. Anilag 2006 Street Dancing Competition- Persevarance pays off for PEQMNHS as it landed fourth place in the Anilag 2006 Ethnic Street Dancing Competition despite the Mt. Everest high budget problems. COstumes are improvised with recycled and artistically designed newspapers as headgears, two higantes borrowed from the Ibaba Elementary School and other improvised equipments along with masterful dancing and graceful poise helped make it a reality. Anilag 2006 is truly PEQMNHS' Finest Moment.

Some say it's Kobe, to other its T-Mac and still to some its VInsanity, even AI and Grant Hill are considered as the heirs to His Airness' throne but for me, its Dwyane Wade and Lebron James.

The Flash, King James and His Airness have the same troubled childhood neighborhood, but D Wade is relegated to the junior varsity team during their sophomore years, much like Jordan. Lebron and Mike share the same jersey of course. A flu stricken Wade had 14 points and 10 assists and scored Miami's last eight points of the third quarter to open a 72-53 lead, reminiscent of Jordan's spectacular effort in the Game 5 of their 1997 NBA Finals against the Jazz. DIng,dong. And Lebron is the youngest player to record a triple double in the NBA post-season. Its a bit difficult to choose huh. Both have their own shares of end-game heroics and both are also considered to be the leaders of their team. Both have tremendous upper body strenght but Lebron is taller at 6'9" while D Wade stands at 6'4" but both deliver devastating blows to the opponent. Both criss cross thru the defense, dish out nice passes and play defense. The one thing D Wade has over Lebron is the fact that D Wade had won his first championship after just three years while Lebron is still searching for it. Inexperience may be a factor but remember, both came from the talented 2003 draft class. Looks like Wade had put one over King James. Maybe next year we can expect a slam bang Eastern Finals between the two legitimate heirs and two superstars that has truly taken the NBA to a new level.

PGMA hospitalized...

After thwarting attempts to impeach her, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo finally was downed, not by his critics but by acute diarrhea and acute abdominal pain.
PGMA was brought to St. Luke's Medical Center late Thursday after returning to the Palace from a restaurant. Presidential Chief-of Staff Mike Defensor and Executiv Secretary both blamed fatigue as one of the contributing factors to the president's condition.

"Our diagnosis is a acute infectious diarrhea, probably secondary to a viral infection that had already been resolved. Presently the patient is comfortable," said Dr. Juliet Cervantes, a gastroenterologist.

The president's schedule this Friday was canceled due to her condition and she was also slated to go to Vatican City and Spain this Saturday. The decision to proceed with trips are to be announced later according to Secretary Defensor.

Prof. Angel Flies Home to Paete...

Paete native and Georgetown associate professor, Angel Cagandahan De Dios comes home again as he set foot last Friday, June 16 at his hometown Paete.

He brings with him tons of resource materials and books for students, and desire to help his kababayans. Our school was a happy recipient as it received a number of books, visual aids and videos to further improve the quality of education in PEQMNHS,especially in the Science subject. Even the students have a fine time with him as they have a lenghty interview with Prof. Angel during his visit to PEQMNHS this morning. These students are the Top 15 of the SY 2005-06, they are Rene James Balandra, Carmina Viray, Marjorie de Rosas, Patricia de Chavez, Rowena Galvan, Jacklyn Selga, Virginia Caraan, Rismel Bayanay, Rovee Renz Rubio, Dean Leo Baldemor, Michael Kakilala, Elena Casilag, Elvine Madridejos, and Veronica Gajo. These students have also received 20$ as a gift from Prof. Angel. They talked about a variety of topics from chemistry and even to Prof. Angel's love life. Prof. Angel will stay here until July 7.

Mt. Bulusan is spewing ash, Mt. Kanlaon is being pasaway, Mt. Mayon is being restive and Mt. Taal had killed ten thousand fishes. This four volcanos have been restive since last month with Bulusan taking the lead with 2 minor explosions, daily ash falls and magma rising to the surface thereby aggravating the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) fears of an impending eruption.
The alert level around Bulusan still stands at alert level 2 which means people must not go inside the 5-kilometer danger zone. Authorities have said that 10,000 residents might be evacuated once the volcano erupts. Evacuation plans have also been set for six Sorsogon towns including Juban, Barcelona, Casiguran, Bulusan, Irosin and Gubat. Mt. Bulusan has erupted 15 times since 1994 and is part of the Philippines most active volcanos. Those 22 volcanos are part of the volcanic active part in the Pacific called "the Pacific Ring of Fire".

The PEQMNHS has grown to 1, 077 students as of last week further enlarging the student-to-classroom ratio to 75:1. This is the first time that PEQMNHS hits the 1000 mark since its inception in 2003. This 1,077 will be facing a brave bunch of 15 volunteer teachers. And along with this, the shifting schedule that has been in place since the start of the school year will continue until the 700 armchairs from the Provincial Government arrives to finally wipe out the shortage of armchairs in the school. This chairs will come from the grant won by PEQMNHS thru its Anilag Dancers last Anilag Festival.

Nagsimula na ang Sy 2006-07 sa PEQMNHS kaninang umaga. Ang mga mahigit 900 estudyante ng PEQMNHS ay humarap sa mga palagiang problema tulad ng kakulangan sa mga libro, upuan at silid aralan. Ang mga 2nd - 4th year students ang lubusang nakadama sa kanilang pagsasama-sama sa highway site ng PEQMNHS, samantalang ang mga 1st year naman ay nasa Upper Palengke site. Magsisimula na po ang SY. 2006-07 sa June 5, Lunes. Inaasahang dadagsa ang humigit-kumulang 900 estudyante sa pagsisimula ng mga klase sa PEQMNHS. Dahil na rin sa kakulangan ng silid aralan, ang PEQMNHS ay muling ipapatupad ang shifting classes simula Martes, June 6. Ang schedul po ng klase ay iaanunsiyo sa araw rin ng Martes.
Ang enrollment po ay muling gaganapin sa ika-6 rin ng Hunyo, Martes. Sa kasalukuyan , sa inaasahang mahigit 900 estudyante ng PEQMNHS, mga 200 pa ang hindi pa nag-eenroll.

Trigonometry, Chemisty and Physics are truly hard subjects, but now PEQMNHS students may know find themselves having amuch easier answering problems related to this three subjects.
The PEQMNHS 20$ Club donated 90 scientific calculators (Casio FX350 model) to augment the need for the said calculators in answering problems in Math and Science especially the above mentioned subjects. The calculators will be under the care of Mrs. Imelda B. Avino, Science teacher and Mrs. Catherine M. Albunag, Math teacher. The calculators will be used by 3rd year and 4th year subjects.

Connecting Students thru Wireless Technology...

Students of the three elementary schools of Paete, and PEQMNHS may know find theirselves surfing the net in the comfort of their own classrooms.
This was made possible by the the grant given by The Cisco Foundation for the schools of Paete, Laguna. These equipments include a wireless network connecting the four schools and the municipal hall. With this technology,it can be possible to access the internet from any classroom or office inside the school building and the municipal hall.The list of equipments include:
- 5 wireless bridges + roof mounting kits + lightning arresters +
power adaptors
- 1 omnidirectional antenna (presumably for the munisipyo)
- 5 Ethernet switches.
The network may be available sometime in late December or early January, 2007. Again, this project is achieved thru the works of Prof. Angel de Dios.

Paete's status as one of the emerging tourist spots in Laguna further reaches a step higher as candidates of Ms. Teen Philippines 2006 visited Paete this afternoon, May 25.
The lovely candidates of Ms. Teen Philippines was warmly welcome by the poeple of Paete as the ladies had captured the fascination of the boys in the neighborhood.
They visited the St. James the Apostle Parish Church, numerous woodcarving shops, and other scenic places in Paete. They even conducted a pictorial on JV Quesada St.
They are only some of the noteworthy visitors of Paete as many other personalities flocked to Paete nowadays. They include the GMA 7 crew who covered this year's Holy Week rites, the wife's of foreign diplomats in the Philippines just to name a few.

Ang PEQMNHS ay iiwan na ng 3 sa ating mga guro. Alam naman po natin ang mga hirap nila sa pagtuturo sa ating paaralan. Kaya di po natin sila masisisi. Naglingkod sila sa ating paaralan kahit na maliit ang kanilang mga sahod at bumabiyahe pa para lang marating ang paaralan. Kaya naman nirerespeto namin ang kanilang desisyon. Kung sino silang tatlo, di ko muna sasabihin, ngunit kung sino ang di niyo makita sa June 5 sila na yun. Ang dalawa sa mga teachers na aalis ay matagala na nating alam samantalang ang isa'y di pa gaanong alam.
At kung may magpapaalam, may mga bago po tayong mga guro at mga babalik na dating kaeskwela na ating makakasalamuha sa pagsisimula ng School Year 2006-07. Kung sino sila, di ko pa pwede ibigay ang names nila pero for sure magugulat yung iba dun sa mga magbabalik na mga dating estudyante ng PEQMNHS at syempre para dun sa mga teachers, mga bagong mukha sila kaya maninibago tayo pero isa lang ang alam ko, mababait daw ang mga iyon. Kaya kilalanin na lang natin sila sa June 5.
Kaya naman wag kayo pahuhuli sa School Year 2006-07 ng PEQMNHS, maraming mga bagong mangyayari at marami ring surprises para sa ating lahat!!!

Ang bilang po ng mga incoming 1st year PEQMNHS students ay umabot na sa humigit-kumulang 250 na mga estudyante. Samantalang ang enrollment ng second to fourth year students ay magsisimula na sa Mayo 29 at magtatapos sa ika-2 ng Hunyo. Ang unang araw ng pasukan ay sa ika-5 ng Hunyo, Lunes.

Journal of Chemical Education (ACS) grants videos to PEQMNHS...

Quality of education in PEQMNHS notches a step higher as the Journal of Chemical Education (educational division of the American Chemical Society) sent copies of their Chemistry Alive videos consisting of seven volumes for the exclusive use of PEQMNHS teachers and students.
This video is seen as a big help in uplifting the quality of teaching in PEQMNHS. This videos was obtained thru the help of Georgetown professor Angel de Dios, a native of Paete.

Garduch Makes It too...

Romi Garduce completed a hat trick for the Philippines yesterday as he finally reached the summit of the 8,850 m high Mt. Everest.
Romi reached the peak at 11:20 am in Nepal(1:20 in the Philippines) amid bad weather and strong wings.
“We didn’t know if we were going to have clear weather at all,” he said. “But we had to try for it (the summit) and we got it.”
He was along a company of 7 people along with their Sherpa guides.
According to Romi, he will rest for a while after the climb and will later continue his adventures either in the icy South Pole, or the very hot Sahara Desert.
Romi had already climb Mt. Aconcagua(22,842 feet) in Argentina, Mt. Kilimanjaro(19,400) feet in Africa, Mt. Elbrus(18,499 feet) in Europe and the 6th highest mountain in the world, Mt. Cho-Oyu in the Himalayan range ( 26,906 feet).

PEQMNHS Population reaches the 900 mark...

PEQMNHS population has unofficialy exceeded the 900 mark according to our estimates as 129 incoming 1st year students officialy entered PEQMNHS last May 17 and today, May 18. Out of 250 plus entrance examinees, 129 students immeadiately enrolled this past two days with 82 enrolling yesterday and 47 today. This number is expected to increase furthermore as there are still one day left for incoming 1st year students. Ariadne Bagalso of Quinale Elementary School garnered 52 points to emerged so far as the highest pointer in the entrance examination.

Philippines Soars Up High!!!!

" The Philippine Eagle has landed. "

Wasting no time at all, Leo Oracion of the First Philippine Mount Everest Expedition Team puts the Philippine flag on the roof of the world as he has ended his ascent to Mt. Everest to finally become the first Filipino to reach the summit of Mt. Everest.
Proudly announcing to the world that the Philippine Eagle has landed, Oracion reached the summit at around 3:30 pm (5:30 pm in the Philippines) along with a group of 30 people including Swiss, Korean and American mountaineers along with their Sherpa guides.
The team was one hour late of schedule as the traffic bogged down when they reach the Hillary step, a round wall of rock around 1 hour away from the summit.
Fellow climber Pastor Emata followed up Oracion as he reached the summit at 6:00 am, Thursday morning.
Another Filipino climber Romi Garduce, is also expected to reach the peak this week.
Mt. Everest has been the zenith of any mountain climbers career since Sir Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa guide, Tenzing Norgay reach first scaled it in 1953.

Oracle (Philippines) Corporation has announced the successful launch of Oracle’s Think.com program involving the participation of Grade 5 and 6 pupils and teachers from the three Paete Elementary Schools in Laguna province, Southern Luzon. Oracle’s Think.com program was introduced in December 2005 in the Philippines in partnership with the Ateneo Center for Educational Development (ACED).

Sinimulan na kaninang umaga ang pagbibigay ng Entrance Examination sa unang batch ng 200 kabataang nagnanais pumasok sa PEQMNHS. Ang bilang na ito ay inaasahan pang madadagdagan sa pagpapatuloy ng Entrance Examination sa Huwebes, May 18 at Biyernes, May 19.

Samantalang ang mga estudyanteng nasa ikalawa hanggang ikaapat na antas ng sekundarya ay maaari nang mag-enroll mula May 29 hanggang June 2, 2006.

Ang unang araw po ng pasok ngayong School Year 2006-07 ay sa June 5, araw ng Lunes.

Brigada Eskwela 2006 Update...

Katulad ng Three Musketeers, sinimulan na po ang Brigada Eskwela 2006 sa PEQMNHS noong nakaraang Mayo 15, Lunes ng Three musketeers ng PEQMNHS na sina G. Jerwin Coladilla, G. Robert Cuevas at G. Jomar Guinto sa tulong na rin ng iba pang mga guro at mga magulang.

Ang layunin po ng nasabing Brigada ay isinagawa upang maisaayos ang mga silid-aralan at maihanda ang iba pang mga gamit na kakailanganin ngayong School Year 2006-07. Ito po'y magpapatuloy hanggang sa ika-19 ng Mayo, Biyernes sa hi-way site ng PEQMNHS at pati na rin sa Upper Palengke Site.

Bulador Festival 2006...

Flying Cars et al...

The air above Wawa Park was filled with bulador, a native word for kites, as Paete succesfully held it's first Bulador Festival last May 7, 2006.

There were kites everywhere. Even a flying car was among the participants of the said event. The bulk of the prizes was won by the Quinalians as they won the first place in the " Pinakamagandang Bulador" category and were tied with Brgy. 1-Ibaba del Sur for the Combat Division. Brgy. 7-Bagumbayan and Brgy. 5-Ilaya del Norte copped the second and third place respectively in the "Pinakamagandang Bulador" category while Brgy. 2-Maytoong zoomed its way to a third place finish in the Combat DIvision. Also Brgy. 7-Bagumbayan's kite was also adjudged as the biggest kite in the competition. A prize of 5, 000 pesos was awarded for each of the first placers, 3,000 pesos was awarded to the second place and 2,000 pesos for the third placer while unlucky competitors was given a consolation prize of 500 pesos. Board members Eufemio Lagumbay and Benedicto Palacol graced the event.

The New Generation Painters

Paete's young blood including a handful of students from PEQMNHS, sharpened and showed their skills and passion for arts as they finished their three week training in the Summer Art Workshop organized by Pilipintura last May 6 at the Sangguniang Bayan Building, Paete, Laguna.

PEQMNHS' Jorlan Aquino, Jorge Ian Magracia and Jayson Banez participated in the said workshop with Jorlan Aquino garnering three awards including the Best Young Artist Award, Best in Oil Painting award and Best in Caricature while Jorge Ian Magracia copped the Best in Portrait diadem. Jorlan Aquino was not new to this as he won 2nd place in the 2005 Division Level Portrait Making Contest, and was also PEQMNHS' Artist of the Year for two consecutive years (2004-2005) while Jorge Ian Magracia shared the plum in the year 2004.

They were trained by the Pilipintura group headed by Joseph "Otep" Bañez and Julie Agbada-Pandalag.

* The first clubs to be organized are the Science CLub(later known as the Proton Troopers), the Math Club and the Carver.

* The recognition day of PEQMNHS was held at San Juan Resort in 2004 and 2006 while the IES covered court was it's home in 2005.

* PEQMNHS is named after the parents of Mrs. Carmencita Quesada-Fulgado, PhD and Mrs. Nora Quesada-Catiis, the donors of the land where our school is standing. They are Mr. Eliseo and Mrs. Poten Quesada.

KOBE or King JAMES, take your pick..

It has been three years since his Airness Michael Jordan retired finally from the NBA, and left throne, and after three years, he has finally found his true heir, not one, not two, not three, it's so many to mention. And two have rose from this ranks and singled themselves out, Kobe Bryant and Lebron James....

Kobe has been enduring criticism after criticism since his maiden years in the NBA, and having the benefit of playing along " Big Daddy" Shaq, his skill is most of the time underestimated. And this criticism balooned itself last year as he failed to lead the purple-and-gold to the play-offs for the first time in 14 years. Yes, the Lakers had endured many injuries and other problems last year but guess what, all the guilt of this debacle had fallen on Kobe's shoulder. And this season, he responded well to the challenge of his returning coach. With the Zen Master steering the ship, Kobe has been on fire all season long averaging 35.4 points in the regular season, 35 points a game is no joke huh. And he is not slowing down, despite his scoring dipping this postseason, he has always attracted the defense and now the Lakers are leading the 2nd-seeded Suns 3-1 and on the brink of advancing to the next round. He had also established record after record highlighted by his 81-pt. explosion last January against Toronto and his streak of 40-pt. games. Kobe is truly destined for greatness.

And Lebron, who is also a prep-to-pro kid like Kobe, has also his share of greatness being the youngest player to score at least 5,000 points, and oh boy he is only on his third year in the NBA, he is also only the third player to record a triple by recording 32 makers, 11 caroms and 11 dimes as he lead the Cavaliers to a 2-2 standoff against the Wizards, he is also the player who holds the record for most points scored in his first playoff game, and also has his share of late-game heroics and also his share of advertisments. He is truly a young kid with a bright future ahead of him in the NBA.

If we consider scoring prowess, we might go with Lakers No. 8, as he had torched all kinds of defense in the NBA this season and has what it takes to explode any given time, but King James is considered to be a much all-around player, scoring and rebounding, distributing the ball and other chores in the hardcourt??!!! What a difficult choice?? huh!!!!

But in the end no one comes close to MJ, he is truly the greatest basketball player EVER to take the hardcourt, his fellow legends had said it, Larry Bird and a lot more had said this and surely it will take more time for either of the two to reach what MJ had did, but credit must be given to Kobe and Lebron, who had reach greatness despite only a few years of experience on the hard court. This two prep-to-pro stars are truly a sight to behold. Two future legends and Hall of Famers, two protagonist fighting for the crown, two gladiators raring to become his Airness heir to the basketball throne.

Anilag 2006 Ethnic Streetdancing Competition

KUDOS PEQMNHS!!!

Overcoming financial constraints, and other difficulties, the PEQMNHS streetdancers surprised everybody to win 4th place and a 200,000 peso project fund in the Anilag 2006 Ethnic Streetdancing Competition last March at Sta. Cruz , Laguna.

The dancers had truly experienced that euphoria of victory as they rewarded all their hardships with that beautiful win, defeating other school having humongous props and plenty of finances. Fighting off budget constraints with guts and unorthodox means, the teachers and the students helped each other to produce much needed props for the contest. Ranging from the paet of the boys, to the lanzones of the girls up to the higantes and banner even to the hairdress, those things are made from sheer guts and artistic hands. Along with the help of fellow Paeteños, the dancers labored their way to 10 stations without anyone fainting to amazed the judges and onlookers and into victory.

Having been practicing since January, their coordination and harmony is truly great and one of the key factors why they had won.

They are trained by Kuya Lito, Ms. Jeanette Bañez and Mrs. Imelda Avino along with all the teachers..

Truly practice makes perfect and perseverance leads to success...

Nagpamalas sina Rene James Balandra, at Jorlan Aquino, mga estudyante ng III-Socrates at si Karen Afurong, estudyante ng II-Abueva sa larangan ng kultura at kasaysayan sa pamamagitan ng pagkamit ng ikalawang puwesto sa Division Culture and Heritage Quiz Bee sa Los Baños, Laguna at ng ikalimang karangalan sa Ika-8 Tagisang Pilipino sa Dasmariñas, Cavite noong nakaraang Agosto 13 at 27.

Sa Los Baños, nakakuha sila ng kabuuang 50 puntos sa loob ng tatlong round na binubuo ng 10 tanong bawat isa na naging dahilan ng pagkamit nila ng ikalawang puwesto mula sa 36 na paaralang lumahok. Bagaman pumangalawa lang ang tatlo, katakut-takot na hirap ang kanilang dinaanan patungo sa posisyong ito. Dumaan sila sa isang mahabang Clincher Round na binuo ng pitong tanong. Ito's dinaluhan ng Division Supervisor ng AP na si Mrs. Carmen Labrague.

Samantalang sa Dasmariñas, ang tatlo'y napalaban sa national level at nagbunga rin ang kanilang paghihirap. Pagkatapos ng elimination round, napili ang 30 paaralang kalahok simula sa orihinal na 40 kalahok upang sumali sa Finals. Ito's binubuo ng isang madaling tanong, tatlong katamtamang mahirap na tanong ,at limang mahirap na tanong. Nagkamali sila ng isa sa mahihirap na tanong na may limang puntos bawat isa. Dahil dito, sila'y bumagsak sa ikalawang puwesto katabla pa ng limang paaralan ngunit nagkamali sila sa CLincher round kaya nahulog sa tabla para sa ikalimang puwesto.

Ang tatlo ay ginabayan nina G. Victor David, guro sa Araling Panlipunan at G. Rolando Afunggol, guro sa Ingles.

PAETE: A town of Craft and Beauty

Although my parents are not natives of Paete, I'm glad I was brought up on this small but creative, industrious town. This town is one of the prides of our country, if the other towns are known for beautiful spots; Paete is popular for the beautiful "poon" and well crafted "ukit" as well for its sweet lanzones.

The town is about 113 kms. away from Manila. It is an inland town of Laguna located on its northeastern part. It is bounded at the north by Pakil, east of Quezon, south of Kalayaan, and west of Laguna de Bay.Paete has a total land area of 6, 301, 625 hectares including the Sierra Madre Mountains. It has 9 barangays all situated in the poblacion.

Rev. Fr. Juan de Plasencia founded Paete in 1580. Paete was originally a part of Lumban then it was annexed to Pakil. Two years after, it became an independent parish under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Pedro de San Buenaventura.

Paete derived its name from the vernacular word paet which means chisel. Chisel is used in carpentry and wood carving industry, for which Paete is well known.

The Roman Catholic Church situated at the heart of this town is one of the few original churches built during the Spanish era, which is more or less 400 years old. Paete is also prominent for its Lenten season activities. Tourists come to see the " Senakulo" . It's the reenactment of the suffering and the crucifixion of Jesus. One of the highlights of the procession at night is the moving saint.

There is also the Salibanda held every third week of January where the Sto. Niño de Palaboy is paraded all over the town. The devotees dressed in red are dancing in the streets while splash water on them..
